Indigenous Peoples, Advocates Join the Call: Impeach Sara Duterte NOW!

Writer: Katribu NasyunalKatribu Nasyunal

Ever since Sara Duterte assumed her position as the Vice President of the Philippines, she has been falling short of what leader the Filipino masses deserve.

From misconduct as Vice President (VP) and Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) to failing to account for billions of pesos in public funds, the neglectful actions and crimes of Sara Dutere span wide. Indigenous organizations and their allies have consistently rejected her leadership and has continuously sought accountability from her and her father’s crimes against Indigenous Peoples and all sectors of society.

During Sara Duterte's term as mayor of Davao City, hundreds of Lumad schools were forcibly closed, depriving thousands of Lumad youth of their right to quality education. The human rights violations accumulated under the Duterte family are more than sufficient grounds for her removal from office.

VP Duterte has betrayed public trust. Both the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and DepEd are under investigation for the misuse of “confidential funds” amounting to ₱112.5 million and ₱375 million in 2023—nearly triple the confidential funds spent by the OVP in 2022. Furthermore, the use of fake names to justify her offices' expenditures has raised serious questions about her budgeting practices.

"Vice President Sara Duterte rented safe houses amounting to hundreds of millions of pesos for unclear purposes, while our Indigenous Peoples, especially the Indigenous youth, continue to be denied access to basic social services like healthcare and education," said Beverly Longid, National Convener of KATRIBU.

KATRIBU Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas joins progressive groups in calling for Sara Duterte’s impeachment. KATRIBU emphasizes that while we call to impeach Sara Duterte, we must also continue to hold President Bongbong Marcos accountable for his administration's failures, including the ongoing violations of Indigenous Peoples' rights and the neglect of their welfare. #
