Live the Legacy of Our Indigenous Peoples Heroes!

Writer: Katribu NasyunalKatribu Nasyunal

International Indigenous Peoples (IP) Heroes Day is a time to celebrate Indigenous Peoples and their communities who have devoted their lives to defending ancestral lands and asserting self-determination. In the Philippines, this year’s theme, “Isabuhay ang Pamana ng mga Katutubong Bayani. Itaguyod ang Karapatan sa Lupang Ninuno at Sariling Pagpapasya!” (Live the Legacy of Indigenous Peoples Heroes. Uphold the Rights to Ancestral Lands and Self-Determination), calls on us to carry forward their legacy by continuing the fight for justice, genuine development, and freedom.

International IP Heroes Day highlights the unwavering determination of Indigenous Peoples and their advocates, who face relentless challenges, including the exploitation of their ancestral lands, militarization, bombings, forced displacement, and human rights abuses. Despite these threats, they remain resolute, inspiring broader movements in the enduring struggle for human rights and self-determination.

On November 20, KATRIBU Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas, the International Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self-Determination and Liberation (IPMSDL), Kabataan para sa Tribung Pilipino, and the UP Fine Arts Gallery held a cultural gathering to honor this significant day. The event also marked the first death anniversary of Bai Bibyaon Ligkayan Bigkay, a revered Lumad leader who embodied the militant spirit in defending her people’s ancestral lands and the environment.

The gathering featured powerful cultural performances and the unveiling of a mural collaboratively created by Indigenous youth, artists, and advocates. The artwork honored five exemplary Indigenous Peoples heroes: Dumagat women Mayeth Corpuz and Marilyn Quierrez, Tumandok leader Roy Giganto, B’laan activist Kaerlan "Lala" Fanaguel, and Manobo leader Datu Kaylo Bontolan. Their bold and militant resistance to exploitation and oppression continues to inspire today’s generation of Indigenous Peoples and advocates for justice and freedom.

We remember our Indigenous Peoples heroes as flowers that bloom defiantly in the harshest conditions. They are petals of hope, each carrying a story of courage, love for their people, and an unyielding commitment to their land. Their sacrifices nourish the roots of our collective struggle, inspiring the next generation to rise against oppression and uphold the dignity of their communities.

International Indigenous Peoples Heroes Day is more than a celebration of past victories—it is a rallying cry for ongoing action. Let us honor our IP heroes’ contributions with a militant and united defense of ancestral lands and an unwavering assertion of self-determination. Together, let us live their legacy and continue the struggle for a just and brighter future

Ang kanilang pakikibaka ay pakikibaka nating lahat. Hindi ito natapos sa kanilang paglisan; ito ay nagpapatuloy.
